The Promise Of Dolphin -Assisted Therapy

Deena Hoagland understands the impact a dolphin can have on a human life. Her son, Joe, was left partially paralyzed and visually impaired after having a stroke at the age of three during open-heart surgery.

What Is It About Dolphins?

Researchers have found, for example, that dolphin-assisted therapy aids in reducing stress and increasing relaxation, alleviating depression, boosting production of infection fighting T-cells, stimulating production of endorphins and hormones, enhancing recovery, and reducing pain.
One of the more popular theories is that the dolphin's use of sonar and echolocation produces changes in a person's body tissue and cell structure. Similar to the effect of music therapy, some researchers have suggested that the sounds dolphins emit through their whistles and clicks help produce these changes. Indeed, some individuals swimming with dolphins have reported actually sensing that they were being scanned.

They say the echolocation resonated in their bones as they felt it pass through their bodies, producing a tingling sensation.

Another theory is that dolphins are uniquely sensitive to the needs of people with disabilities and seek to help them through playful expressions of concern. This is sometimes referred to as a "secret language" shared when dolphins and people with disabilities "communicate." Dr. Smith goes so far as to suggest that dolphins communicate acoustically with a variety of movements and attend to the body cues of individuals; in particular, individuals with autism, thereby seemingly understanding their thoughts and actions.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. THEN EVERY YEAR THERE AFTER IT’ll GO TO OUR SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM SO IT WONT GO BROKE IN 20 YEARS.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

DCF Investigating Case Involving Baby That May Not Exist

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- The State Department of Children and Families is spending time and money trying to rescue a baby who probably doesn't exist. It's a strange case involving a Brevard County couple who DCF says is too dangerous to have children.

DCF apparently received a call to their hotline. They maintain they have an obligation to see if there is a child at the house that might be in jeopardy. The question is whether there is or isn't a baby.

DCF acknowledges that this baby maybe didn't exist , but had the baby existed and had he been abused thy would have to investigate.

55 Year Old Woman Burned to Death in Florida

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Someone burned a woman alive outside her home near Bithlo early Friday morning, but deputies don't even know if it was a crime. The victim died in the hospital Friday afternoon after she was burned on Marsh Creek Lane.
"'Help me! Help me! I'm burning! I'm gonna die,'" Marta said Ratcliff was screaming. Marta brought out a blanket to cover up Ratcliff, but said her neighbor of several years was almost unrecognizable.
"'Help me! Help me! I'm burning! I'm gonna die,'" Marta said Ratcliff was screaming.

Authorities initially thought two suspects dragged the woman from her home and set her on fire, but after questioning one person of interest for hours, they let him go and mysteriously announced they were no longer treating the case as a homicide.

"I'm speechless now," Marta said after hearing it wasn't being considered a homicide, but she said she could never imagine Ratcliff hurting herself on purpose.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is now only calling the incident a death investigation. No one will elaborate beyond that...

Little Girl in Lee County Florida , Burned!

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a reported incident of child abuse in which a little girl’s buttocks were burned. Deputy Michael Carr reported he was notified of the incident on March 17 by the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida. The victim reportedly had two open wounds on each side of her buttocks.

“According to the Department of Children and Families protective investigator Jean Balmir, the mother of the child did not know how the injuries occurred,” Carr reported. “The victim was examined by medical staff at the Children’s Advocacy Center.”

State of Florida Blocks Mother From Seeing Her Children

DAYTONA BEACH -- The mother of twin girls trapped in an apartment fire -- one who died and the other who was severely burned -- is forbidden by the state from seeing her three surviving children, officials and family members said Monday.

The restriction, which began days after the March 16 fire, prevented Robin Cain from saying goodbye to her 4-year-old daughter, Kathryn Cain, before the child was flown to The Shriners Hospital for Children in Cincinnati a week ago.

"The Department of Children & Families said she can't see them or talk to them," said the children's father, Robert Cain, from Kathryn's bedside at Shriner's on Monday.

DCF local administrator Reggie Williams confirmed that a no-contact order was filed against Robin Cain. The 38-year-old is not allowed to visit or speak to Kathryn and Chase Cain and her older daughter Sheyenne Lundgren, 16.

Kathryn, her twin sister, Krystal, and 5-year-old Chase were staying at Robin Cain's apartment when flames broke out after 11 p.m. in the bedroom the three children were sharing, state fire officials said.

Robin Cain, Lundgren and the teen's unidentified boyfriend also were in the apartment when the fire erupted. The two adults and Lundgren ran out of the burning three-bedroom unit. But the three children were left behind, fire officials said.

A neighbor ran into the smoke-filled apartment and rescued Chase; Daytona Beach firefighters saved Kathryn, who was still in the bedroom.

But the thick smoke and racing flames would not allow firefighters to find Krystal, who had apparently hidden in a closet.

The little girl died of smoke inhalation.

The surviving twin underwent skin-graft surgery at Shriners and is recovering from the burns that covered the front portion of her body, Robert Cain said Monday.

The 31-year-old father said the no-contact order was filed by DCF officials in light of what happened the night of the fire and "other things that have been going on."

Robin Cain, reached for the first time since the fire, said Monday that her attorney had advised her not to speak to the media.

However, court documents show Robert Cain gained temporary custody of the twin girls in January, after he told a judge that his estranged wife locked the children in their bedroom.

The father, in court documents, also said Robin Cain is an alcoholic, something the daughter, Lundgren, said two weeks ago. The teenager said her mother had locked the youngsters in their bedroom because they often woke up in the middle of the night and wandered the apartment. Lundgren, who is staying with a family friend, also said her mother would place a potty in the bedroom for all three children while they were confined.

The children were not locked in the night of the fire, and her mother may have fallen asleep in the bathroom when it started, the older sister said.

State fire officials have said the fire originated in the children's bedroom, but the cause is still unknown.

Muslims more numerous than Catholics: Vatican Reuters hat Atlas Shrugs

Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism as the biggest single religious denomination in the world, the Vatican said on Sunday.

Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's newly-released 2008 yearbook of statistics, said Muslims made up 19.2 percent of the world's population and Catholics 17.4 percent.

"For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have overtaken us," Formenti told Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in an interview, saying the data referred to 2006.

He said that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, then Christians made up 33 percent of the world's population -- or about 2 billion people.

The Vatican recently put the number of Catholics in the world at 1.13 billion people. It did not provide a figure for Muslims, generally estimated at around 1.3 billion.


Formenti said that while the number of Catholics as a proportion of the world's population was fairly stable, the percentage of Muslims was growing because of higher birth rates.

He said the data on Muslim populations had been compiled by individual countries and then released by the United Nations, adding the Vatican could only vouch for its own statistics.

Mediating Elder-Care Disputes.

It's hard enough for families to navigate the complicated and emotionally charged decisions related to elder care when everyone gets along.
Throw in a family with tensions or outright hostility and it's no wonder that disagreements sometimes end up in court, an expensive proposition that can easily magnify divisions. Another way to handle these problems is growing in popularity: mediation.

A mediator is sometimes brought in at the order of a judge seeking to settle a dispute without taking it to a jury. But elder-care practitioners are urging more families to take the step voluntarily, especially in disputes over how to handle guardianship for family members who can no longer care for themselves.

Mark Dennen's family was embroiled in nearly two years of litigation centering around guardianship for his father, then 92 years old, when a judge ordered the case sent to mediation.

"Everybody brings in all this emotional baggage and the mediator helps bring things into focus," Mr. Dennen says. "It's designed to get to a solution." The mediation brought the legal battle to an end just months before Mr. Dennen's father passed way.

Agreement Is the Aim -
The basic idea behind mediation is that a dispute is resolved through an agreement among the parties, instead of a resolution mandated by a judge or negotiated by attorneys. The role of the mediator -- usually an attorney or someone with a background in social work -- is to facilitate communication and informed decision making.

The cost of mediation varies around the country. In big metropolitan areas, it can easily cost $300 to $500 an hour, although it's possible to find dispute resolution centers that are significantly less expensive.

Robert Rhudy, a former legal-aid attorney turned mediator, has championed the use of the practice to resolve elder-care disputes in Maryland. "In mediation, everybody who is affected by the situation has an opportunity, in a neutral and confidential setting, to tell their story," he says. Whenever possible, that includes the elderly family member.

Defusing Tensions -
The mediator can help ease communications among family members for whom the elder-care dispute may reopen decades-old wounds.
"Things like 'Mom always liked you better' and brothers and sisters who haven't gotten along since they were three years old come to the fore," says Mr. Rhudy.

Common candidates for mediation are disagreements between family members who live far away and a sibling who lives closer to the elder and may have a different assessment of that person's needs.
Sometimes the disputes are between children and elderly family members who have their own view of where they should be living and who should be caring for them.

Mediation can be used to settle disagreements over living arrangements, how finances should be handled, who should be granted power of attorney, and even visitation rights among squabbling siblings. Agreements often specify the kinds of information, especially financial and medical updates, that will be provided to family members who live far away.

The personal nature of these disputes is what makes mediation helpful, says Forrest Mosten, a Los Angeles attorney who has been a mediator for nearly three decades. "The remedies that a court offers are very limited...but in mediation, an apology may end the dispute."

Mediation also allows for informal or even interim solutions, Mr. Mosten says. "You can try things out and see how they work," he says. For example, instead of immediately pursuing a formal guardianship, one child could become a co-signer on a bank account. "If that works, then you don't have to go any further."

There are some times when mediation alone isn't sufficient, says Nina Weiss, an attorney and mediator in Princeton, N.J. If a guardianship is in order, for instance, that must be ordered by the court system.

The mediation process for elder-care decisions can -- and most say, should -- bring in experts such as social workers, estate-planning specialists and health-care professionals who would typically be called upon as part of a court case. "The courts will recognize the same issues....It's just that you avoid the expense" of litigation, says Joseph Mahon, an estate-planning attorney in New Jersey (who isn't also a mediator).

Finding a Mediator -
One challenge facing families looking for mediation help is that there is no formal licensing or credentialing for elder-care mediators, notes James Bergman, a co-director at the Center for Social Gerontology, an Ann Arbor, Mich., nonprofit group that has been a longtime advocate of elder mediation.

"Anyone can hang a shingle out and say they're an elder mediator," he says.
But there are plenty of experienced mediators, so it's largely a matter of tracking down those with experience in the area and, importantly, a mediator the parties feel comfortable with.

One place to start are local nonprofit mediation groups, such as the Montgomery County Mediation Center in Eagleville, Pa., which can generally be located online. There are also state organizations, such as the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators.

Some states have lists of mediators officially approved by their courts. And online, the Association for Conflict Resolution offers the public the ability to find mediators from among its members at acrnet.org.

Also online, Mediate.com and EldercareMediators.com offer names of mediators (who pay small fees to be listed).
